How Australia Post's zones work

Australia Post groups overseas destinations into rate zones. The exact zone names and counts depend on the service (Standard, Economy, Express), but the underlying logic is the same: closer destinations and major trading partners are cheaper; more remote or lower-volume corridors are pricier. Roughly:

Zone 1: New Zealand and South Pacific

The cheapest international destinations from Australia. Short transit times and Australia Post's strongest direct-air relationships.

Zone 2: Asia

Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan are typically the fastest. Mainland China is cheap but customs queues add variability.

Zone 3: North America

Reliable transit. Section 321 USD 800 de minimis on the US side is one of the most generous in the world and removes duty on most consumer-value parcels. See our Australia to USA guide.

Zone 4: Europe

Stable corridor with predictable transit. The EU 150 EUR import duty threshold and 22 EUR low-value VAT abolition mean almost all parcels into the EU now collect VAT at the border. Zone 5: Middle East and Africa

Longer transit times. Customs handling is destination dependent and we strongly recommend declaring contents accurately to avoid clearance delays.

Zone 6: South America

Australia Post's longest-transit zone. Customs handling in some destinations is slow and unpredictable; DHL Express is often a better choice. See our AusPost vs DHL comparison.

Caveats

• Transit times are typical, not guaranteed. Australia Post does not contract delivery times outside its Express service. Customs delays at the destination are not counted.
• Pricing varies by weight and dimensions, not country alone. A 0.5 kg satchel to Germany may be cheaper than a 5 kg box to New Zealand. Use the calculator for a real quote.
• Restricted items vary by destination. Food, supplements, alcohol and electronics have country-specific rules. Check before forwarding.
